http://archive.org/details/gd1989-12-06.sbd.miller.tetzeli.fix-14917.33821.reflac.flac16 JUST A LITTLE LIGHT. Well there ain't nobody safer than someone who doesn't care And it isn't even lonely when no-one's ever there The honey's sometimes bitter when fortune falls on you So you know I've been a soldier in the armies of the night And I'll find the fatal error in what's otherwise all right But now you're trembling like a sparrow, I will try with all my might To give you just a little sweetness Just a little light I have always heard that virtue ought to be its own reward But it never comes so easy when you're living by the sword It's even harder to be heartless when you look at me that way You're as mighty as the flower that will grow the stones away Even though I've been a stranger full of irony and spite Holding little but contempt for all things beautiful and bright Something shines around you and it seems, to my delight To give me just a little sweetness Just a little light It could be just another highway coiled up in the night You could be just another white-tail, baby, stranded on my brights There's a tingling recognition like the sound of distant thunder And I begin to wonder if the love I've driven under won't ignite

What's not to like? Really?!? OK, sorry, I gave it its due. (That link didn't work, btw). But I just find Brent not to my taste as a lead singer. Overdone delivery and (to me) unappealingly Doobiesque sound. Of course, you've heard that before :-)

Actually the lyrics are pretty good when you just look at them in print. OK, a bit over-the-top IMO. (He's a "solder in the armies of the night" who's "living by the sword," and she's a sparrow AND a flower AND a white-tail?!? Ack.) But there are some powerful and intimate feelings in there. I've got to respect it for that.

I gather this was an earthquake benefit. Couldn't listen through the song, though. And then it's followed by Victims and then Don't Ease ... What were they doing, personifying the pain of the earthquake, sending the fans into the deepest and darkest place before they'd give some hope, healing and relief? (Sorry.)

BTW, maybe a Throwin Stones or Samson would have been tasteless, but of all the shows that should have had a Touch of Grey ...

Set list:

Shakedown Street, Walkin' Blues, Friend Of The Devil, Queen Jane Approximately, Jack A Roe, A Little Light, Victim Or The Crime, Don't Ease Me In Scarlet Begonias-> Sugar Magnolia-> Ship of Fools*-> Terrapin Station*-> Drums*-> Jam-> The Wheel-> All Along The Watchtower*-> Standing On the Moon*, Sunshine Daydream*, E: Black Muddy River

* means with Clarence Clemons

Personally, I'd trade all Brent's tunes for a good 73 Let Me Sing Your Blues Away.

I know, but the William and Mary show? With the Saxophone? Does me in every time man.

Ugh.. yes. Just a Little Light is the consummate piss break song -- from the cheesy keyboard "melody" to the cut-and-paste bridge section. It's better than some Brent tunes, but not by much. Nobody would ever give a damn about it except for the fact that Garcia plays on it, and even his part is phoned in.

Probably my favorite Brent tune, though I prefer the summer '90 versions. The band is still working out the tune here and I beleieve you can hear it in this version.
The lyrics (Barow's I think) are amazing. He wrote some great tunes imo, and a couple I loathe. (Love Tons of Steel).
Don't care for the Doobie-esque sound either, but I think it's important with
the Brent canon to be careful and not throw the baby out with the bathwater.

I liked it best of the late Brent tunes, but strangely, my favorite versions are the Phil and Friends-"Quintet" versions with Warren Haynes singing . Also I like the song with that beefy/hard rock, guitar sound of Phil's group of the time .
